off to see the wizard

THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ

For Halloween 2021, my sister asked us to join her girls in dressing up as the characters from the Wizard of Oz. Halston has always loved that movie, and I could not resist. Some years our costumes are more creative than others, and this was one year I wanted to “create” the costumes and not buy something off the shelf.

For Halston’s Glinda costume, I purchased this dress with this petticoat for added fullness. I hope I did not pay that for the dress as the zipper broke off and we had to safety pin the dress on! This crown and this wand completed her costume.

For Halston’s Wicked Witch costume, I purchased a dress from Zara (on sale for $12.99), a hat from this shop, this cape, and these green tights. (My sister had the fun idea to reenact the story with a photoshoot, so Halston got to play 2 parts). Once again, the professional photos shown on this post are thanks to her!

Dorothy provided the red sparkly shoes, and I simply took a pair of Halston’s striped leggings, stuffed them and tied them at the top for the shot above.

But my favorite costume of all was McCall’s cowardly lion.

I looked at a few rompers I thought could work, before deciding on this one from Etsy. I ordered this badge of courage, and switched out the ribbon to the red and white stripes. At the time the website showed it came with a red and white striped ribbon, so I was disappointed when it arrived and did not look like the image. It looks like they’ve got that fixed on their site now.

But our lion needed a tail! So, I went to Hobby Lobby and could not believe my luck when I found an almost perfect, slightly yellower, match to the fabric in the romper.

I snatched it up and ordered this fur from amazon. I cannot sew at all, but my mom always comes through for me. She stuffed and stitched the tail together, and it turned out so perfect. I used more of the fur for the collar, simply wrapping it around her and safety pinning it together.

I absolutely love how her Cowardly Lion turned out. And they, of course, loved trick-or-treating.
